Salary: $55,415 to $70,703 annually
Lateral Hires may be eligible to start at Step Two on the Wage Scale. Amount
includes 6% that is contributed to PERS after 6 months of employment.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responds to and performs a variety of duties related to the prevention of
loss of life or property including: (1) preventing, combating, and extinguishing
fires; (2) examining, evaluating, treating, and transporting ill or injured
persons utilizing advanced life support skills and abilities; and (3) rescue or
protection from hazardous environments; conducts fire prevention inspections;
performs maintenance duties involving equipment and fire stations; operates fire
department apparatus and equipment; participates in classes and training
sessions; conducts training and public education as requested in special areas;
performs related duties as required.
Essential Duties
- Responds to and participates in providing various emergency and
non-emergency services.
- Qualifies and performs, after proper training, in the capacity of Acting
Engineer and/or related duties deemed necessary.
- Practices good safety standards when performing all duties.
- Maintains uniform and person in a clean and presentable condition.
- Performs inspections, tests, maintenance and service of fire department
apparatus, stations, grounds, and equipment; assists in maintaining apparatus
and equipment in a state of operational readiness for those emergencies
involving Fire Department action.
- Engages in fire prevention, pre-fire inspections, and public relations
activities.
- Maintains excellent public relations at all times.
- Acquires and provides those medical skills necessary for the Department of
Fire and Life Safety to provide advanced life support and ambulance services.
- Participates in ongoing training in order to improve in skills and
knowledge of evolving fire science and emergency medical technologies.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the role of public service; knowledge of report writing
techniques; ability to learn techniques associated with emergency and
non-emergency operations; ability to use emergency medical equipment; ability
and skill in the use of hand tools and power tools; ability to climb ladders,
handle hoses, and lift heavy objects, that could weigh 100 pounds; ability to
develop and maintain harmonious working relationships; ability to understand and
follow oral and written instructions; ability to spell, punctuate, and express
thoughts in writing as well as use effective oral communications; ability to use
office equipment; ability to work effectively at considerable heights and in
confined areas; ability to endure cold, heat, and strenuous activity under
hazardous and dangerous conditions; ability to remain calm in emergencies;
ability to establish and maintain good public relations.
Experience and Training
Current certification as an Oregon EMT-P; or enrollment in an EMT-P program
that will produce OR EMT-P certification by September 1, 2008. You must be
prepared to give a copy of your current Oregon EMT-P certification; or a
letter stating your enrollment and participation in an Oregon EMT-P class, and
your plans for obtaining your Oregon EMT-P certification by September 1, 2008
at the Physical Ability Test (3/9/08).
Desirable Experience and/or Training:
- Field patient care experience as an Oregon EMT-P.
- Firefighting experience.
- Advanced education in fire science, fire prevention, emergency medical
services, hazardous materials, or a related field. You must provide a copy of
any degree or certification at the Physical Ability Test (3/9/08).
Other Requirements
- To become certified as a Firefighter 1 by the completion of the
probationary period.
- To maintain an Oregon State EMT Paramedic certification and provide
patient care within the scope of that certification.
- To maintain physical fitness throughout employment.
- Possess and maintain a state of Oregon driver’s license that enables the
applicant to drive all equipment operated by the department. You must provide
a copy of your valid driver’s license at the Physical Ability Test (3/9/08).
- To participate in assigned training.
- Firefighters/Paramedics must refrain from use of tobacco products at all
times. This is a condition of employment.
- The person selected must provide appropriate documentation of eligibility
to work in the United States of America at the time of appointment.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Employees in this classification are represented by the International
Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and the salaries are subject to a monthly
fair share payroll deduction.
There will be periodic advancement throughout the salary range based on
satisfactory performance (if a lateral hire occurs, an employee may be
eligible to start at step 2 of the wage scale). The City provides a full range
of benefits, including holidays, vacation, sick leave, life insurance,
retirement plan membership after six months of employment, and medical and
dental coverage. Employees performing certain duties are eligible for
additional benefits.
APPLICATION, TESTING AND SELECTION SCHEDULE AND PROCESS
The department is establishing two eligibility lists from which it will
choose candidates for consideration as Firefighter/Paramedics. One list will
rank all candidates who are currently EMT-P certified; the other list ranks
candidates who are pending certification by September 1, 2008.
The eligibility list will be established by a series of screening tools and
tests, to include an Employment Application, Supplemental Questionnaire,
Written Test, Physical Ability Test, Paramedic Skill Assessment, Psychological
exam, Comprehensive Background, Medical Examination to include drug screening
for controlled substances, and Oral Interviews. Aptitude, personality profile,
mental and physical fitness, paramedic skills and communication skills will
all be evaluated.
